Some of our members use Flintbox as their primary place for listing technologies, while others use it as a secondary marketing tool. One of the challenges for both is figuring out how to utilize Flintbox alongside their own websites. We have a few tips and examples that will help our members find the best way to incorporate Flintbox into their own sites.
1) Include Flintbox as a menu item: If you have a private label site (a version of Flintbox that is designed to look like your own website), then you will likely want to incorporate Flintbox as a menu item in your navigation. There are a couple of ways of doing this, but one of the best is to name the menu item with a descriptive label, such as “Available Technologies”. Many of our members label the menu item Flintbox, and while this is another good option, companies visiting your site may not know what Flintbox is, which is why we recommend telling them exactly what they will find when they click on the link – your technologies.
Here are a few examples showing how our members are incorporating Flintbox into their sites:
McGill University uses a call out box for their technology listings, from their own site and from Flintbox. They use the Flintbox logo to direct the eye over to this box.
University of Manitoba has branded their postings as “Hot Technologies” and uses a chili pepper logo to draw attention to their offerings.
2) The Flintbox RSS feeds: Another great way to showcase your Flintbox listings is by offering your organization’s Flintbox RSS feed as a link on your site. RSS (Real Simple Syndication) feeds allow you to stay on top of new information without having to constantly visit the site. Flintbox publishes RSS feeds for each of our organizations with a private label site. Anyone can then use these feeds as a live bookmark in their browser, or in a news reader to stay up to date on all your postings. Look for the RSS icon
, copy the corresponding link and offer it on your own site.
3) Coming soon…we’re currently working on a widget to export the Most Popular and Most Recent postings from Flintbox and use this content as a box on your own website. Keep an eye on Flintbox andour blog for news on this exciting new feature.
